Unpinning the Angelus Novus — Published

Date: 04.02.2025

The series Unpinning the Angelus Novus (2022) is now presented on the studio platform. The work takes Paul Klee’s Angelus Novus and its philosophical afterlife in Walter Benjamin’s ninth thesis as its central figure. In the artist’s own words: “Unpinning Paul Klee’s Angelus Novus wings from the storm of Paradise becomes, for me, an allegory of unwrapping history — turning the gaze toward the future after an eternity spent contemplating the Past of Paradise. We can no longer unconsciously carry the artifacts of the past into our Present without adopting the perspective of this angel, pausing to see events not merely as a sequence but as catastrophes.” The first realized work in the series — Unpinning the “Soldier‐Liberator” — subjects a stained‐glass mosaic panel to this critical operation, refusing the commemorative object its unreflective claim on the present.

The series will continue to expand.
